In this
connection, as a first step, the Department of Civil
Engineering has been awarded with ISO 9001-2000
certification by BVQI in 2005, after auditing by
UKAS. It is targeted that national and international
levels are reached in the laboratory activities as
well as research and implementation activities in
practice.
During EU process,
Faculty of Civil Engineering has started to
participate in faculty members and students exchange
programs in the frame of ERASMUS program. Each
department has a sister department at a European
Country and correspondent relations have already
been started.
In our
departments, with their modern spaces and
laboratories, education and training, as well as
research and development activities are carried out.
The system has necessary dynamics to follow up with
current science and technology.
The history of the
Faculty of Civil Engineering is identical with the
history of Yildiz Technical University. With a
similar mission and vision today’s YTU in 1911, with
the name of School of Conductors geared to educate
technicians for public works. During the early years
of young Turkish Republic the school continued its
mission and in 1937 its statue was changed to an
engineering college with the name of Istanbul
Technical School, later in 1969 keeping the same
status its name was changed to Istanbul State
Academy of Engineering and Architecture. Finally, it
became Yildiz University in 1982 and Yildiz
Technical University in 1992. During these years of
progress one thing has never changed: to offer a
good engineering education for students.
As a classical
engineering branch, civil engineering appeared at
the beginning of the last century with the name of
Civil Engineering, started in this university in
1937. Another engineering branch was started in
1949, with the name of Mapping and Cadastral
Engineering. Completing 53 years of successful
education, this department is now continuing its
activities under the name of Geodesy and
Photogrametry Engineering.
In the last
quarter of the last century, environmental issues
reached to a significant level, and therefore a
third department, the Environmental Science
Engineering Department was established. Now the
Faculty of Civil Engineering has three well-known
departments: Civil Engineering, Geodesy and
Photogrametry Engineering and Environmental Science
Engineering.
In departments of
Civil Engineering and Geodesy and Photogrametry
Engineering two different undergraduate programs are
carried out concurrently. First program is between
8:00 and 18: 00 hours, whereas second program is
between 16:00-22:00, hours. The approximate number
of students in each department is shown below.

In all three
departments there are sufficient numbers of faculty
members: Professors, Associate Professors and
Assistant Professors, as well as lecturers and
research assistants (see web site of the
departments).
Regarding graduate
study, there are six fields of study in the Civil
Engineering Department, namely: Hydraulics,
Transportation, Engineering Mechanics, Structures,
Coastal and Harbour Engineering, and Geotechnics.
There are two fields of study in Geodesy and
Photography Engineering Department: Geomatics,
Remote Sensing and GIS. Together with the
Environmental Sciences there are nine fields for
graduate study, leading to both Master of Science
and Doctorate degrees.
In addition to
education, many research projects supported by
different organizations, i.e., TUBITAK (Turkish
Scientific and Technological Research Committee),
DPT (State Planning Organization), KOSGEP (Small and
Middle Scale Companies Research and Development
Project) are being carried out in all three. Also,
technical consulting services, laboratory testing
services, and design services, as well as continuing
education courses are offered to public.
